You can now reach 95mph on this rollercoaster

Standing six metres taller than the Statue of Liberty, capable of speeds just shy of 100mph, and with an 81-degree first drop, this is clearly not a theme park ride for those with a weak constitution.

Fury325 is the world’s tallest and fastest rollercoaster, a term used for rides that have a drop of between 300 and 399 ft (91-122m), with a height of 325ft (99m) – that’s five times taller than the Big Dipper in Blackpool.

The ride will open to the public on March 28 at the Carowinds theme park in North Carolina, USA, which is investing a total of $50 million in new rides and ticketing systems.

Other well-known giga coasters include the 94-metre Millenium Force at Cedar Point amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio, and Steel Dragon 2000, at Nagashima Spa Land in Japan, which is 97m tall.

Fury325 is not the world’s tallest rollercoaster overall: that gong goes to the Kingda Ka, at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, which takes riders to the perilous height of 139 m (456 feet)

American theme parks have a history of opening ever-more outlandish theme park rides. Last year the world’s tallest waterslide, at 51.38 m (168 ft 7 in), opened at Kansas City theme park.

A new record will be set in 2017 when the world’s tallest rollercoaster, at 500ft, opens at Florida‘s Skyplex entertainment complex.

Fury325: the facts

Height: 99m (325ft)

Top speed: 95 miles per hour

Length: 6,602 feet of track

Sharpest angle: 81 degrees

Ride time: 3 minutes 30 seconds
